In her first attempt at the marathon distance, Molly Huddle accomplished something no American runner — male or female — had done in the New York City Marathon since 2010.

Huddle, a two-time Olympian, finished third, giving the United States a spot on the podium for the first time since Shalene Flanagan finished second in the NYC Marathon, likewise in her first 26.2-mile race.

Huddle placed third with a time of 2:28:13, with Kenya’s Mary Keitany easily winning the marathon for the third consecutive year, in 2:24:26. Sally Kipyego of Kenya placed second place, in 2:28:01.
