Matt Besler '09 didn't want to go to Europe.
For years, the most promising young American soccer stars have been encouraged to play professionally across the Atlantic, where the more competitive and lucrative leagues would better serve the development of their skills and bank accounts. But when his decorated career at Notre Dame came to an end, Besler was determined to stay home.
“I love America,” Besler explained, reflecting on his decision five years later. He bypassed overtures from European squads in favor of Major League Soccer, the top American league that has had its viability questioned more than a few times over its 18-year existence.
