Summer means a long, luxurious break for many college students — but rising high school seniors with their eyes set on the country’s top universities are getting ready to bid for their own ticket to the college world. For them, summer means time to finish researching universities, visit campuses and begin writing application essays.

Student government presidents at Yale, Notre Dame and Princeton talked with USA TODAY College about their old college applications and gave advice to high school seniors about to begin their own. Featuring Alex Coccia, 21, University of Notre Dame Student Government president:
