Fr. Jenkins Remembers Fr. Hesburgh

The following is a statement from Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame, on the one-year anniversary of the death of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., Notre Dame’s president from 1952 to 1987.

“As we mark today the one-year anniversary of the passing of Father Hesburgh, it hardly seems possible it was that long ago. But perhaps that is because his presence can tangibly be felt in so many ways still, through the results of his service to the Vatican and Church, his presence on presidential commissions, and, of course, his leadership of Notre Dame.

“Looking back to a year ago, I cherish the memory of our students lining the road to the cemetery in frigid weather conditions, the thousands who paid last respects in the Basilica, and the wonderful words spoken by national leaders at our tribute to him.
