Fighting Urban Heat with Greener Ideas

One of Chicago's most beautiful and hidden gardens is located on top of City Hall, part of an effort to 'green' roofs to fight rising temperatures.

Harindra Joseph S. Fernando, the Wayne and Diana Murdy Professor of Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame, is studying how cities can better engineer buildings and landscapes to avoid soaring urban heat.
