Today, May 25, marks the 98th anniversary of the birth of the Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, president of the University of Notre Dame from 1952 to 1987.
Hesburgh died on Feb. 26.
Trained as an educator and committed to life as a Catholic priest, Hesburgh may be best remembered for his contributions to civil rights and humanitarian causes.
His grave site in the Holy Cross community cemetery at Notre Dame has become a stopping place for followers. Visitors frequently leave small tokens at the gravestone, including partially smoked cigars.
