Hesburgh Library (feature)The famous "Touchdown Jesus" mural on the library was unveiled half a year after the library's completion.

When the University of Notre Dame's new 14-story library building opened 50 years ago this fall, its south exterior wall was blank.

There was no "Touchdown Jesus" image to be seen until the following May, when the iconic mosaic -- formally named "The Word of Life" -- was unveiled.

Notre Dame is marking the 50th anniversary of the library's opening with events throughout the 2013-2014 academic year.
