During the offseason it seemed all the attention in South Bend was focused on the potential of the 2014 Notre Dame offense, while the defense was overlooked as a young, inexperienced group. And not without reason.
By my count, eight true freshmen have seen the field already for the Irish, and not just in garbage time. The young guns are making an impact all over the field to the tune of 10.3 points allowed per game. That’s good for fourth in the country.
One of the biggest contributors thus far has been safety Drue Tranquill, who leads all freshmen with nine tackles on the season. The Fort Wayne native’s role expanded even further against Purdue with Notre Dame’s enormous attrition in the defensive backfield.
