U.S. Air Force Major Joseph “Max” Walters spends his days training members of Afghanistan’s fledgling military to not only fly helicopters, but to make sophisticated airborne combat part of its strategy as it fights the insurgents who are trying to regain control of the war-torn country.

It’s an important, exciting and demanding task, but for all the gravity of the mission at hand, Walters still finds time for one weekend ritual that connects him to Indiana — reading up on the latest Notre Dame football game.
