Swarbrick: Irish near new TV deal

Notre Dame Athletic Director talks with Brian Kelly before a Notre Dame football game on October 8, 2011

After months of deliberation, University presidents have approved a 4-team playoff system for college football in 2014, leaving Brian Kelly feeling mighty happy about the postseason prospects of his still-independent Fighting Irish.

So you'd think Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick, who worked with the 11 major conference commissioners at the postseason negotiations, would take a few days off.

Nope.

Today Swarbrick told Chicago Tribune beat reporter Brian Hamilton that Notre Dame expects to make a new TV deal - most likely with longtime partner NBC - sometime in the next 30 days.

Because the current Notre Dame contract with NBC doesn't expire until 2015, Swarbrick told the Tribune that his office is still determining if now is the right time to strike a deal.  Even if he defers the decision until a later date, Swarbrick said he'd prefer a shorter contract term.
