NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The No. 1 University of Notre Dame men's and women's fencing programs closed out an undefeated weekend, earning seven wins each against club competition Sunday to wrap the DeCicco Duals at the Castellan Family Fencing Center.
The Irish each defeated Case Western, Chicago, Purdue, Indiana, Michigan State, Michigan and Denison to add to their five-win totals from Saturday. The women improved to 23-2, while the men moved to 24-1.
Nine women and 10 men turned in undefeated score sheets Sunday as neither team won by less than 19 points. The Irish women won three matches — against Purdue, Indiana and Denison — by perfect 27-0 scores, and the women's sabre squad never lost a bout
Foilists Beatrice Verrecchia and Erica Tsai tallied 21 victories each for the women, while sabreuses Christian Boitano (18-0), Natalie Disher (14-0) and Sienna Wilson (10-0) and epeeists Giorgia Giordano (9-0), Miriam Grady (6-0) and Dasha Yefremenko (6-0) also were loss-less.
For the men, sabreurs Guram Lortkipanidze (11-0), Ben Scholl (10-0) and Logan Kanary (6-0); foilists Robert Wong (6-0 foil; 3-0 epee), Thomas Murray (9-0), Matt Tichacek (7-0) and Joseph Marino (4-0); and epeeists Aidan Antekeier (11-0) and Cole Mallette (9-0) all spent the day in the win column.
The Irish will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Illinois.
