William Shakespeare was born 450 years ago, on April 23, 1564.
Closer to home and today, the University of Notre Dame also is celebrating two other significant Shakespeare milestones this year:
- The first full production of a Shakespearean play on campus took place in 1864, with "1 Henry IV," for the 300th anniversary of the playwright's birth.
- Beginning Tuesday and Wednesday with preview performances and continuing through Aug. 31, the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival presents its 15th Mainstage production, "Henry IV," a combination of the two parts of the "Henry IV" plays that NDSF Ryan Producing Artistic Director Grant Mudge and "Henry IV" director Michael Goldberg adapted for this production.
