When it comes to Army, Navy and Notre Dame football, Gerry Motl can rattle off statistics with ease.
The 66-year-old Naval Academy alumnus began collecting the triumvirate’s football memorabilia after graduating in 1968. Motl, a Downtown resident, played football for the Midshipmen in 1966-1967. The collection has since grown to more than a thousand items. Several years ago – at wife Roxanne’s urging – he created a database to keep track of all his finds. In 2011, “Shipmate,” the official alumni magazine of the United States Naval Academy, dubbed Motl’s collection “perhaps the most impressive and historically significant collection of Navy football memorabilia.”
