Virginia Beach, Va. -- Results are in from the first two days of the January North American Cup competition, and University of Notre Dame fencers pepper the top 30 spots across multiple weapons classes.
Competition began Friday morning with Junior Women’s Epee and Div. I Men’s Foil. The Irish slotted five foilists in the men’s competition, and three of the five finished in 30th place or better, led by senior Ariel DeSmet with his fifth place standing. Following DeSmet was freshman Hazem Khazbek, in 24th place, and Nick Kubik finished in 29th place.
DeSmet was undefeated in pool play, and entered direct elimination with the No. 4 seed. He scored a pair of 15-4 wins to advance into the round of 32, and then out-touched Hans Kaiser 15-6 to advance into the round of 16.
DeSmet again was on the winning side of a 15-6 score in his bout with Jason Chang, but could not keep his momentum and lost to Michele Caporizzi, 15-10 in the semifinals.
