Ellen Gleadow, a 2016 Notre Dame graduate and former member of the Notre Dame rowing team, finished second in the women’s lightweight single sculls at the 2018 World Rowing Cup I in Beograd, Serbia, on Saturday, June 2, 2018. The silver-medal effort marks the best of Gleadow’s career with Canadian Rowing in the first major international rowing event of the year.
Gleadow began the regatta with a victory in her first heat, finishing in 7:57.480. She moved on to win the A/B semifinal in 8:13.230 - three seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. In the final, she jumped out to a lead before Belarus’ Alena Furman took control at the halfway point, eventually just edging Gleadow 7:46.150 to 7:47.940.
