WASHINGTON -- Vice President Joe Biden and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi took turns Wednesday leading an often humorous but sometimes emotional celebration of the decades-long service of the Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh as the University of Notre Dame's president emeritus prepared to mark his 96th birthday.
"Your work has been extraordinary," said Biden, who surprised many at the celebration held in the U.S. Capitol's Rayburn Room just across the hall from the House of Representatives' chamber.
"You are one of the reasons I am so proud to be a Catholic."
