USA TODAY Sports college football reporter Dan Wolken has loaded up the car and hit the road, where he'll check out more than a dozen college football camps over the next two weeks. Each day, he'll file a vignette about what he observed and detail the significant storylines heading into the season.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – "Here's kind of a curveball," the question began, which any journalist knows is a terrible way to conduct an interview. But seeing as how Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick was so generous with his time Friday and so forthright on a number of topics, it only seemed polite to give him a little warning.
"This isn't a commentary on the NCAA," Swarbrick said, "but another person in college athletics pointed this out to me a few years ago and it's so true. He said, the satisfaction in collegiate sports administration is directly related to the level of contact with student-athletes. The closer you are to them, the better the job. The further away you are, the tougher the job. And it's so true."
