The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team kicked off the 2017 season Sunday with a pair of sweeps over Western Michigan and Wright State at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.

How It Happened

Western Michigan
The Irish’ doubles pairs cruised past the Broncos in all three matches, racing to the finish almost simultaneously. Junior Allison Miller and senior Mary Closs won first at No. 2 doubles over Olivia Myers and Denise Azcui, 6-0. Just a handful of minutes later, junior Brooke Broda and senior Monica Robinson closed out their match at No. 1 doubles over Melina Lyubomirova and Tracy Kuhle, 6-1. Already having secured the doubles’ point, the Irish continued to dominate doubles play with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles by senior Jane Fennelly and freshman Bess Waldram over Barbare Eristavi and Katja Fevralev.

Continuing into singles play, Western Michigan proved to be more stubborn with a few competitive first sets. The Irish clinched the dual victory with Miller’s 6-1, 6-4 win over Myers at No. 3 singles. After losing the first set and trailing for most of the third set 10-point tiebreaker, sophomore Rachel Chong dug deep to pull out a 5-7, 6-3,10-8 thriller over Fevralev at No. 5 singles.

Wright State
The Irish reconvened in the afternoon for another dual matchup against the Wright State Raiders. After Chong and Spence made quick work of their match at No. 3 doubles with a 6-0 win, Closs and Miller secured the doubles point for the Irish with a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. Robinson and Broda lost in a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles to Tori Turner and Taylor Culbertson 7-6(5).
