Facing a two-goal deficit midway through the second period, the Fighting Irish scored the game's final four goals, including two by Dylan Malmquist, en route to a 4-2 victory and a weekend sweep of Maine.
With the game two win on Saturday night at Alfond Arena, the Irish (17-9-4, 10-5-3 HEA) moved into a tie for third in the Hockey East standings.
How It Happened
Maine jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 26 seconds into the first period when Blaine Byron forced a rebound in front past Cal Petersen following a shot through traffic by defenseman Eric Schurhamer.
Brendan Robbins gave the Black Bears a 2-0 lead when he converted on a 2-on-1 chance at 3:03 of the second period.
But then Maine took two penalties on the same play at 8:25 of the second to give the Irish a 5-on-3 power play. Just 19 seconds into that chance, Jordan Gross hammered a shot from the top of the circles past Maine goaltender Matt Morris for his eighth of the season, with the assists going to Anders Bjork and Bobby Nardella.
After killing off a pair of Maine power-play chances late in the second, the Irish power play unit tied things up at 2-2 when Malmquist finished off a quick passing sequence for his seventh goal of the season. Nardella and Gross notched the assists on what was Malmquist's third power-play goal of the season, scored on a one timer from the bottom of the far circle.
Just 2:46 into the third, Malmquist collected a Dennis Gilbert clear at the offensive blue line, broke down the far side and sent a snapshot low, stick side past Morris for his second goal of the night.
Andrew Oglevie scored the insurance goal at 16:21 of the third when he put a loose puck down low past Morris for his 18th goal of the season. Jake Evans and Cal Burke assisted on the play.
