Physicists make Sudoku "Richter Scale"

Sudoku Richter ScaleIf the algorithms recorded the difficulty of the Sudoku puzzle as it was solved, this is what it would probably look like. We think.

Notre Dame professor Zoltan Toroczkai, along with Maria Ercsey-Ravasz of Romania's Babes-Bolyia University, have created a better Sudoku solution.

The two researchers recently published a paper in "Applied Physics Letters" detailing their work on Sudoku-solving algorithms.  Rather than using the brute force solutions of most Sudoku enthusiasts, Toroczkai and Ercsey-Ravasz developed advanced algorithms to complete each puzzle much more quickly - leading to a Sudoku "Richter Scale" of difficulty.
