SOUTH BEND — It started as a casual fundraiser to unite Fighting Irish football fans and raise money for a campus festival.
In the 25 years since, The Shirt has grown into an annual event at the University of Notre Dame that raises more than $775,000 a year for charitable causes. Sales have grown to more than 155,000 a year, making it one of the best-selling pieces of collegiate apparel in the country.
This year’s 25th anniversary version, unveiled Friday, is blue. The front features an image of Notre Dame Stadium with the phrase: “Then, Now, Forever: Notre Dame Football 2014.” The back bears an image of the Fighting Irish football team running onto the field inside the stadium between two columns of the Notre Dame Marching Band and cheering fans in the stands, with the words: “We are” and an interlocking ND on the field.
