Rivalry marks 30th anniversary of first night football game at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND — It was a sight nobody had ever seen before — Notre Dame Stadium lit up at night.
Roger Valdisseri, Notre Dame’s former sports information director, said the atmosphere leading up to the game, knowing it would be played under the lights for the first time, was like Mardi Gras.
“People that came into the stadium would first say, ‘Oh, wow,’” Valdisseri said. “They had never seen Notre Dame Stadium lighted. It took them by surprise. They loved seeing it at night; it was spectacular.”
The game on Sept. 18, 1982, ended in a 23-17 win over rival Michigan.
