Even as the United States Post Office announced a third-quarter loss of $5.2 billion Thursday, it's tough to imagine a USA without the USPS.

Notre Dame professor James S. O'Rourke, a business communications expert, says email or Internet communication can never effectively replace the Postal Service.

Besides: Dogs everywhere agree that chasing the FedEx or UPS delivery trucks doesn't have nearly the romanticism of the classic white Postal Service trucks.
