Hurling is an ancient Irish sport, illustrating Irish history for two thousand years. But until recently, there was never a focused effort to bring hurling to an international audience that had little Ireland connection. To export the game outside Ireland, the Gaelic Athletic Association and the Gaelic Players Association developed a special "Super 11s" form of hurling that can be played on a soccer or lacrosse field.
Two teams of Ireland's best players were chosen to play in the Celtic Champions Hurling Classic, which introduced the Super 11s to the United States for the first time ever at the University of Notre Dame.
